The Islamic Perspective on Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him)

Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) is one of Allah’s (God’s) creations, a devoted servant, and among His noble messengers. He preceded the final messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), and was sent by Allah to the Children of Israel to call them to believe in and worship Allah Alone.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

And ˹remember˺ when Jesus, son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel! I am truly Allah’s messenger to you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and giving good news of a messenger after me whose name will be Ahmad.”1 Yet when the Prophet came to them with clear proofs, they said, “This is pure magic.”

(Surah Al-Saff 61:6)

Belief in Jesus (`Īsa) in Islam

Belief in Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) is a core tenet of Islamic theology, as Allah commands Muslims to believe in all His messengers.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

O believers! Have faith in Allah, His Messenger, the Book He has revealed to His Messenger, and the Scriptures He revealed before. Indeed, whoever denies Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has clearly gone far astray.

(Surah Al-Nisa 4:136)

The Miraculous Birth of Jesus (`Īsa)

Allah created Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) miraculously, without a father, to his mother Mary (Maryam – peace and blessings be upon her), in the land of Palestine. He was a human being who ate, drank, slept, suffered pain, and wept, just as all humans do.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food.1 See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!

(Surah Al-Ma`idah 5:75)

Jesus (`Īsa) as a Messenger to the Children of Israel

Jesus (Īsa – peace be upon him) was sent at a time when the Children of Israel had strayed from the Straight Path. They had transgressed the limits set by Allah, spread corruption on Earth, and indulged in sinful desires, denying the Resurrection, Reckoning, and punishment. At this critical point, Allah sent Jesus (Īsa – peace be upon him) to guide them back to the truth.

Allah taught him the Torah (Tawrat) and the Gospel (Injil) and entrusted him with the mission of calling the Children of Israel to believe in and worship Allah alone.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

And Allah will teach him writing and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and ˹make him˺ a messenger to the Children of Israel ˹to proclaim,˺ ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make for you a bird from clay, breathe into it, and it will become a ˹real˺ bird—by Allah’s Will. I will heal the blind and the leper and raise the dead to life—by Allah’s Will. And I will prophesize what you eat and store in your houses. Surely in this is a sign for you if you ˹truly˺ believe.

(Surah Al-Imran 3:48-49)

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Those who say, “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. The Messiah ˹himself˺ said, “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah—my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates others with Allah ˹in worship˺ will surely be forbidden Paradise by Allah. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.

(Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:72)

Miracles of Jesus (`Īsa)

To support his message, Allah granted Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) miracles as proof of his prophethood. These miracles defied the laws of nature and affirmed the truth of his message. Among his miracles:

  • He healed the blind and the leper.
  • He brought the dead back to life.
  • He shaped clay into the form of a bird, blew into it, and, by Allah’s permission, it became a living bird.

All these miracles occurred solely by the permission of Allah, demonstrating that Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) was a messenger of God, not divine himself.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

And ˹on Judgment Day˺ Allah will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour upon you and your mother: how I supported you with the holy spirit1 so you spoke to people in ˹your˺ infancy and adulthood. How I taught you writing, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel. How you moulded a bird from clay—by My Will—and breathed into it and it became a ˹real˺ bird—by My Will. How you healed the blind and the lepers—by My Will. How you brought the dead to life—by My Will. How I prevented the Children of Israel from harming you when you came to them with clear proofs and the disbelievers among them said, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

(Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:110)

Jesus (`Īsa) Was Not Crucified

Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) was neither crucified nor killed. Allah saved him from his enemies and raised him alive to the heavens. It was a hypocrite, one who had betrayed Jesus, whom Allah caused to resemble him, and he was the one who was crucified instead.

and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so.1 Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever—only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him. Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

(Surah Al-Nisa 3:157-158)

The Return of Jesus (`Īsa) Before the Day of Resurrection

Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) will descend to Earth before the Day of Resurrection as a follower of Muhammad (peace be upon him). During his return:

  • He will confirm that the Jews did not kill or crucify him.
  • He will refute the Christians who exaggerated his status, claiming he was God, the son of God, or part of a trinity.

Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) will restore justice, guide people to worship Allah alone, and serve as a testament to the truth of Islam.

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: By Him in Whose hand is my life, the son of Mary (ﷺ) will soon descend among you as a just judge. He will break crosses, kill swine and abolish Jizya and the wealth will pour forth to such an extent that no one will accept it.

(Narrated by Muslim, no. 155)

Conclusion

In Islam, Jesus (`Īsa – peace be upon him) holds a position of great honour as one of Allah’s chosen messengers. His miraculous birth, prophethood, and eventual return are key aspects of Islamic belief. Understanding his true role helps to bridge gaps between faiths and highlight Islam’s emphasis on monotheism and devotion to Allah alone.
